Why Is This Product On Rise?

Safecoat Transitional Primer is water-based and provides a flat finish for difficult applications. This acrylic primer also happens to be low-odor and created without the use of HAPs. Especially useful for covering up knot holes in wood applications, or stains and oils from wood.

Use this product on previously painted walls, ceilings, wood and wood trim, fully cured plaster, stucco, and masonry. AFM Safecoat Transitional Primer is a primer specifically formulated to solve certain application problems without the use of toxic chemicals. Use over oil-based paints in order to transition to water-based topcoats.

Specifications and Important Details

This primer is designed for applications, indoors or outdoors, over previously painted walls, ceilings, freshly sanded wood and wood trim, fully cured plaster (below 10 pH), stucco and masonry. For new sheetrock, use New Wallboard Primecoat HPV.

Because it has an extremely tight and efficient polymer network, AFM Transitional Primer can be used as a sealer on some, but not all, surfaces that are off-gassing hazardous air pollutants. In combination with AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Paint, emissions can substantially, if not completely be eliminated gradually over the course of one to two weeks.

AFM recommends one coat of Transitional primer (allow 24 hours to dry) and then two top coats of AFM Zero VOC paint. NOTE: This combination will not block emissions from essential oils, air fresheners, hair spray, smoke, pet urine or other organic odors. For smoke and pet urine odors we recommend AFM Odor Out.

Testing with small samples is your responsibility and must be done first to make sure there is proper adhesion, appearance and there is no reaction with a previous finish, especially if it is unknown. AFM makes no guarantees that this will perform well over all paints or all finishes and takes no responsibility for applications that have not been tested first or have not followed the manufacturers directions.

Drying/Curing Time

While this primer has a low odor when wet, it dissipates quickly as long as the temperature and humidity are normal, i.e. 55-80 degrees F and 35-65% relative humidity. Should the temperature be much lower or the humidity much higher, the curing of this product could take much much longer. While it dries to the touch quickly, full cure can take up to two weeks when conditions are other than normal. NOTE: must dry 24 hours before applying top coats.

Cleanup

Clean tools and equipment while they are still wet with a warm soapy water solution. Any unused paint should be stored in air tight container for reuse. Or, add kitty litter to solidify in the can or roll out on a piece of cardboard and leave to dry before disposing. Do not flush excess primer down the sink or toilet.

Health Precautions

As with all coatings and sealers, keep container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not take internally. Always use adequate ventilation.

Installation Notes

Surface Prep

Clean surfaces of dirt, grease, mildew and oil. Surface should be completely dry before application. Surfaces painted with oil based as well as any glossy latex paint should be sanded to promote adhesion. Wet sanding is recommended to degloss the surface. Knot holes and water or rust stains should be spot primed before undercoating the entire surface. Always spot test for adhesion over prior coatings.

Application

Stir well before use; then apply with brush, roller or airless sprayer. Always wear painters mask when spraying. Thick application, high humidity or conditions other than normal will cause Safecoat to dry and cure more slowly.
